Xiaomi, known for its smartphones, has ventured into electric cars with the SU7. Now, they’ve unveiled a high-performance version, the SU7 Ultra, aiming to be the fastest 4-door car globally, whether gas or electric.
The SU7, priced attractively at 215,900 RMB (under $30k USD) for the 299hp base model, has created a buzz as an affordable electric sports car similar to the Porsche Taycan. An upgraded “Max” model, offering 673hp, is available for around $41k USD. The car sold out quickly, resulting in a seven-month waiting list with about 50,000 orders.
While the SU7 has received positive reviews, some concerns about quality and durability remain. Xiaomi has now introduced the SU7 Ultra prototype, boasting extreme hypercar performance. The Ultra features 1548hp from three motors—two “V8s” and one “V6s” electric motors. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 1.97 seconds and has a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).
The SU7 Ultra includes advanced regenerative braking and physical braking, stopping from 100 km/h to zero in just 25 meters. Weighing 1900kg (4188lbs) and with all carbon fiber body panels, it’s relatively light for its class. The car also features improved aerodynamics and cooling, a large wing generating significant downforce, and a new CATL Qilin II battery, chargeable from zero to full in 12 minutes with an 897V charger.
Xiaomi aims to make the SU7 Ultra the fastest 4-door ever on track days, targeting the Nürburgring in October. The current 4-door EV record is held by the Porsche Taycan at 7 minutes and 7 seconds. Xiaomi’s challenge lies in managing temperatures, crucial for electric track cars, where Porsche has significant experience.
Availability and pricing for the SU7 Ultra are yet to be announced, with the car currently labeled a “prototype.” Whether it will reach the market and expand beyond China remains to be seen.
